3. Empathize with feelings, not with alleged abuses

4. Maintain balance of interest and limits on stories

5. Provide structure and focus

6. Avoid over-reacting to intense emotions

7. Avoid using strong anger or intense criticism

8. Teach self-help skills, encourage self-sufficiency
